Times Leader Photo Galleries An area veterinarian who devotes his free time to protecting rural landscapes won top honors in the Times Leader’s Jefferson Awards for Public Service regional contest. Douglas Ayers, 45, was recognized for his environmental efforts during a midday ceremony Thursday at the Woodlands Inn & Resort, Plains Township. 2007 Jefferson Awards for Public Service Finalists

Theresa Hahn: The Lehman Township resident, 72, improves the lives of many area children and adults, in part by ensuring that they can read. Hahn volunteers with the Greater Wilkes-Barre Association for the Blind. She assists in vision screenings for hundreds of preschool children each year, during which some youngsters are referred to doctors for further diagnoses and treatments. By getting help early, these children often can avoid learning problems or potentially serious vision disorders.

Charie Aponick Shavertown Nominator: Charles Barber of The Luzerne Foundation Nominated for: Garnering support for the Millennium Circle Fund, a community-building tool of The Luzerne Foundation, and for her involvement with nonprofit groups such as the Boy Scouts' Northeastern Pennsylvania Council and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic.
